2022-11-10Jin Yu in search of the beauty of the impossible
Marta Cywińska: Dear Jin Yu, your painting has traveled from Beijing to the galleries of Spain and Italy. Does the painter-author of portraits have a special mission in the modern world?
Jin Yu: First of all, I'm glad that there are many people who like my works, which gives me great confidence. People's emotions are the most mysterious and beautiful, while the facial expressions are like special words, which is the most primitive way of communication. Therefore, portrait painting has become an important painting subject with rich historical context. Today, Chinese and Western artists have made multi-dimensional expansion for portrait painting. The art of this era is more diversified, and each artist has more content to choose. Artists have more perspectives to interpret the world. Whether these works are for the purpose of recording or emotional needs, Both bear the brilliance of humanistic spirit and rationality, and are important carriers for artists to reshape the artistic "spiritual light".
Marta Cywińska: Who inspires you ? The old European masters or do you rather reach for contemporary symbolism?
Jin Yu: It is precisely because I am deeply fascinated by European classical art that I embark on the road of artistic creation. This is also the reason why I have always insisted on creating with oil painting. The inspiration source is growing up gradually. My goal is to constantly find new images and individual unique languages. European classical masters and styles of various schools are attractive to me. I need to find innovation in the tradition in order to break through myself and find myself.
Marta Cywińska: I make no secret of the fact that I have been fascinated by your work for a long time, which made the paintings and poetry meet and went into the world together. What do you think is closer to painting poetry and why?
Jin Yu: In my opinion, painting is a reflection of speculative and philosophical ideas, not a copy of nature. It is a picture produced by thinking, imagination and fantasy combined with the real feelings revealed by oneself. It is full of dreams and imagination. It creates a real and mysterious artistic realm by combining classical modeling techniques with self emotional deformation interest, gorgeous colors and romantic feelings. Through the pictures, you can feel the most beautiful quality of human nature. Similarly, I think poetry has the same mission, the essence of art is the same, emotion is the expression of human emotion, painting and poetry are just different forms of expression. There is an important theory in Chinese classical aesthetics, "the integration of poetry and painting", which is the charm of poetry and painting.
Marta Cywińska: When did you start painting ? Was it a sudden idea or a maturing process ?
Jin Yu: The year 2009 was a turning point for me. I resigned from my stable teaching job and devoted myself to the path of professional artists. I once rode to Tibet alone, hoping to find a sense of connection with my own spirit in that mysterious land. Paintings in that period mainly explored the emotional changes of characters; He also carefully studied the masterpieces of heavyweight masters from ancient and modern times and at home and abroad. From the meticulous portrayal of classical modeling techniques to the expression of abstract and decorative ideas, he developed sophisticated techniques, expanded the boundaries of thinking dimensions, and gradually formed his own personal style in this process.
Marta Cywińska: Your works are a song in honor of the woman.... .
Jin Yu: "Beauty" is the core of my artistic expression, and women are the representatives of beauty. I do not simply emphasize female images in my paintings, but use female images to express their true feelings. Its real purpose is to create a set of aesthetic standards of its own, refine the elements of "beauty" on the basis of anti traditional aesthetics, and complete the world reconstructed in my art.
Marta Cywińska: "A good painter must paint two things: a man and the essence of his soul" - said Leonardo da Vinci. So are landscapes "secondary" in human history?
Jin Yu: Leonardo da Vinci is a great artist. I think he is a man across the ages. His theory is also applicable to this era. In fact, this is the ultimate goal of an artist. The final work of an artist is actually an artist. The specific subject matter and content of works of art are not the most important. It is precisely because the works most truly reflect the artist himself. Only when the works endow the soul, can works of art be called works of art.
Marta Cywińska: The 21st century is the decline of high culture. Can it still be saved?
Jin Yu: In this era, the issue itself is very controversial, but I personally agree with this issue. Now we can see all kinds of decadent abstract graffiti and cartoons filled in the art circle, and many elegant arts will be despised. At least this has been a very obvious phenomenon in China. In fact, I think this problem can not be simply found in the art circle, but should consider the changes of the entire era, Now more people have difficulty in reading a book seriously, so it is impossible to ask him to think about painting. Everything is circular. If we go forward, we will go backward, but we will continue to go forward. This is the question of which stage we are at. Looking back on history and looking forward to the future, we will find that people's preferences are a cycle, but the wheel of progress will continue to move forward, and history will retain the imprint of the times. Elegant art will also grow into a new look and leave its own mark according to the changes of the times.
Marta Cywińska: Thank you very much, dear Jin Yu.
